(Orange County Register) ? Open-air Newport Beach mall Fashion Island is renovating in the first expansion of a major Orange County shopping center for some time. The mall?s building boom is unusual in the current economic climate, said Nelson Granados, an associate professor at the Graziadio School in Irvine. That Fashion Island can expand ?is amazing in an environment where online retailing is growing fast and many brick-and-mortar stores are closing.?
