New jobs for the new year in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS)-

If you're looking for a new job, then you might want to look in the Mt. Vernon area. The community is adding more than 500 jobs in the new year.

The new jobs are going to come in a number of areas starting out at the Continental Tire Plant.

"They're going to add a $237 million expansion to their existing facility," said Mary Ellen Bechtel executive director for the Jefferson County Development Corporation. "And they'll be hiring for that expansion 350 jobs this year and another 50 in the following year. And then the Good Samaritan Regional Health Center at their new campus that expansion is going to add another 120 jobs."

The good news doesn't stop there for the community. The expanding coal industry in southern Illinois is going to push Magnum Steel Works Inc. to expand its existing facility by another 128,000 square feet, and more than a hundred jobs.

"There are jobs. And we're looking for people to fill those jobs," said Bechtel.

Along with all the new jobs will also come millions of more dollars flowing into the local economy.

"We're excited about it, here in the King City we feel like we're getting our crown back right now,"said Brandon Bullard executive director for the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. "We feel like things are growing so well, and we're the place to be right now. And we couldn't be any prouder of that."

And on the evening of Jan. 26 the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will host an informational summit at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts to inform everyone about the new growth in the area. And the opportunities it presents to local businesses.
