THE sight of 30 Jews in kilts, learning Scottish country dance on a lawn at 2am isn't one you often come across in the Borders.

But this was all part of the festivities when Israeli diplomat Rony Clein and her husband Jeoff travelled from Jerusalem to tie the knot at Thornylee House near Walkerburn.

Jeoff, who had visited the Borders many times in the past, fell in love with the area - and in keeping with Scottish tradition, the couple and their international guests wore kilts on the big day.

Rony explained: "The day was wonderful, it was everything that we could hope for in terms of the people and the weather.

"My husband has been to the Borders many times and he was telling me how beautiful it is and how friendly people are - he fell in love with the area.

"This is the first time I've been here, and I've fallen in love with it too. Scotland is the most beautiful country I can imagine!"

Rony and Jeoff met on an online dating site and despite Rony giving him a 'difficult time' at first, the couple decided to wed.

But in Israel only the rabbinate, an exclusively Orthodox institution, can marry Jewish couples - meaning that Rony and Jeoff, who are reform Jews, cannot marry there.

Like many other Israelis in a similar situation, the couple decided to travel abroad for their wedding.

And as Jeoff had a long-time friend near Clovenfords, they picked the Borders as their destination.

Gregor Scott, who has known the groom for 20 years through work, said: "I've been a director of a couple of Israeli companies, which is how I met Jeoff.

"He has been to Scotland many times and his sons have worked for me on the farm.

"For the wedding we got a temporary venue licence for my house and held the reception on my lawn.

"There were about 30 guests from every continent, as the bride has served in embassies all over the world. Ironically I wasn't wearing a kilt, but all the international guests were!

"We taught them Scottish country dancing - by 2am they had got the hang of it. Hopefully we've now spread the tradition around the world!"

The couple wed in a Scottish civil ceremony, performed by Peebles registrar Liz Paxton.

Rony added: "Jeoff and I met on an online dating site. I gave him a bit of a difficult time at first but he was persisten.

Gregor and his family opened their house- and their hearts - to us. Everyone was so welcoming."
