So many ways to communicate? | UDig's IT Staffing Blog

These days, there are so many different ways to communicate with clients, potential clients, employees and potential employees. The ability to get in front of and stay in front of these people is getting easier and easier. Figuring out the best route to take is a different story.

Below is a list of communication avenues for you and your business to stay in front of your clients and prospects on a daily basis ? some are obvious (phone) but I wanted to illustrate the vast number of communication techniques businesses can employ. It is important to know your audience and what the best communication vehicles are for them (as well as their preferences). The need to continue to pursue new and innovative ways to communicate with people is constantly growing and businesses must keep up in order to compete in 2013 and beyond.

  • Facebook ? In case you?ve been living in a cave, Facebook is a social networking service with over one billion active users. More than half of Facebook users are on a mobile device.
  • Twitter ? An online social networking service and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters. Twitter has over 500 million registered users generating over 340 million tweets daily and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.
  • Blogging ? A discussion or articles, often on a specific topic, published on the Internet. It is estimated that there are over 42 million blogs and that 60% of businesses have a blog.
  • Pinterest ? A social bookmarking site where users collect and share photos of their favorite products, events, interests and hobbies. Pinterest is the?third-largest social network behind only Facebook and Twitter.
  • YouTube ? A video-sharing website where users can upload, view and share videos.
  • LinkedIn ? A social networking site mainly used for professional networking. As of January 2013, LinkedIn reports more than 200 million registered users in more than 200 countries and territories.
  • Present.ly ? Allows individuals to post short, frequent updates that are tracked or ?followed? by others, similar to Twitter. But unlike Twitter, Present.ly provides a secure and private way to do this, enabling users to share updates among members of a company without them being visible to the outside world. Present.ly enables you to share images, documents, video and audioclips with colleagues. You can also keep the team conversations focused by creating groups for each project or topic of discussion.
  • Website ? Again, in case you?ve been living under a rock, a website is a set of related web pages containing content such as text, images, video, audio, etc. A website is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via a network such as the Internet. A must have in 2013.
  • Instant Messaging (IM) ? A form of communication over the Internet, that offers quick transmission of text-based messages from sender to receiver. In push mode between two or more people using personal computers or other devices, along with shared clients, instant messaging basically offers real-time direct written language-based online chat.
  • Instagram ? An online photo-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take a picture, apply a digital filter to it, and share it on a variety of social networking services, including its own and other leading sites such as Facebook or Twitter.
  • Skype ? This service allows users to communicate by voice using a microphone, video by using a webcam, and instant messaging over the Internet. Phone calls may be placed to recipients on the traditional telephone networks. Video and voice. Good combination.
  • Texting ? The act of typing and sending a brief, electronic message between two or more mobile phones or fixed or portable devices over a phone network. Don?t Text and Drive.
  • Email ? A method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. Modern email operates across the Internet or other computer networks.
  • Cell phone ? A device that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator.
  • VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) ? Commonly refers to the communication protocols, technologies, methodologies, and transmission techniques involved in the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.
  • Phone ? A telecommunications device that converts sound, typically the human voice, into electronic signals suitable for transmission via cables or other transmission media over long distances.
  • Mail ? A system for transporting letters and other tangible objects via USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc. Nothing like a handwritten note?just not on Saturdays.

Good luck embracing new communication avenues in 2013.
