Broadway faces potential holiday labor headache

(AP) ? The union representing hundreds of Broadway theater cleaners, porters, elevator operators and bathroom attendants voted Wednesday to authorize its leaders to call a strike if a new contract isn't approved by the end of the month, potentially throwing a wrench into a busy holiday season.

Members of the 250-person 32BJ union voted during a noisy rally on the street outside the Times Square offices of the Broadway League, which represents producers and theater owners.

Any strike would affect workers at 32 of Broadway's 40 theaters where the 32BJ has a contract, meaning all the Shubert, Nederlander and Jujamcyn-owned theaters, as well as the Circle in the Square Theatre. The eight other Broadway theaters have different arrangements.

The 32BJ contract expires Dec. 30, and workers are seeking pay increases and better health care benefits. The next bargaining session is scheduled for Friday and another is set for Dec. 18.

Jessica Vargas, a cleaner at the Lunt-Fontaine Theatre and a member of the union's bargaining committee, said that her fellow workers make about $17 an hour and that she hopes to get a $1.50 per hour increase. Other cleaners in the city, she noted, make about about $25 an hour.

"We want to be equal with all cleaners all across New York City. We get paid the lowest on Broadway," Vargas said. If there is a strike, she said, "it's going to be tough on Broadway. It's going to be rough on the city. If we go on strike, the city goes on strike."

Many of the people who do Broadway's most unglamorous work ? hauling equipment, running the elevators, tidying bathrooms and sweeping the theaters ? must work for as much as 10 weeks before their health coverage kicks in. The union wants that coverage to start when employees begin work, among other demands.

"We need health coverage for every week that a worker works," said Shirley Aldenol, vice president of the union. "We're here to fight to make sure that our theater cleaners get treated fairly and with respect."

The League, in a conciliatory statement, said it has had several days of "productive negotiations" with the union and looks forward to reaching "a mutually beneficial agreement."

This being Broadway, there was a little razzle-dazzle amid the car honks and whistles at the rally. Three stilt walkers from the Bread and Puppet Theater troupe towered above the crowd; two women dressed as cleaners in white smocks and feather dusters tried to tidy up the street while being berated by a man on stilts with a top hat, a fake mustache and a cigar.

The last major strike on Broadway was in late 2007, when a 19-day walkout dimmed the lights at more than two dozen shows and cost producers and the city millions of dollars in lost revenue.

Many speakers at the rally pointed out that the health of Broadway is good, with shows yielding a record $1.14 billion in grosses last season, and total attendance reaching 12.3 million.

"What attracts people? Well, it's a great experience that they have. That is because of our actors, it's because of our musicians and of course it's because of the people behind the scenes ? our cleaners, our porters, our elevator operators, our matrons," said New York City Council member Dan Garodnick.

The 32BJ, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, has more than 120,000 members, concentrated in the Northeast. It represents janitors, property maintenance workers, doormen, security officers, window cleaners and food service workers.

Chilling out no help for those with relaxation-induced anxiety - The ...

People with relaxation-induced anxiety get stressed out when they begin to unwind, experts say.

By Cari Nierenberg

You may be counting the days until you get your holiday R & R, but for some people, rest and relaxation is a scary thing. They freak out while chilling out.

The phenomenon, known as relaxation-induced anxiety, happens when people become anxious as a result of being relaxed. While it sounds contradictory, activities such as exercise, listening to music, or taking a vacation trigger anxious feelings.

"Someone with a fear of relaxation is able to initially relax," says Christina Luberto, a doctoral student in psychology at the University of Cincinnati, who has developed a questionnaire, known as the Relaxation Sensitivity Index, to examine this fear. "But once they start to feel relaxed, they begin to feel anxious as a result."

Instead of enjoying a bit of down time, their heart rate increases, their breathing speeds up, their muscles tense and they feel nervous and worried. Relaxing activities don't truly unwind them but rather make them feel wound up.

Relaxation-induced anxiety is a fear of relaxation itself or an increased fear that occurs not long after relaxation is achieved, explains Luberto.

For example, people with this fear may dislike getting a massage because they're frightened by the physical sensations it creates when tension gets released from their muscles and their neck and shoulders loosen up.

Or some might be scared of the mental aspects of chilling out, such as the unwanted thoughts that enter their heads when their minds quiet down. Still others may be afraid of the social consequences of doing relaxing activities, such as appearing lazy, feeling a loss of control, or worrying they're not relaxing "correctly."

Luberto says relaxation-induced fears are relatively common based on a study involving 300 college students, most of whom were 21 years old, female and Caucasian.

Participants in the study were asked to rank on a scale of 0 to 5 statements such as "I worry that when I let my body relax, I will look silly" and "When my mind begins to wander, I worry that I might be going crazy." Luberto's preliminary findings revealed that about 15 percent of those tested experienced relaxation-induced anxiety.

While that number reflects the frequency of these fears in a group of relatively healthy young adults, Luberto says relaxation-induced fears may run as high as 50 percent among people with anxiety disorders. And there's not yet information on its frequency among individuals with other types of mood disorders or mental health problems.?

Luberto is quick to point out that relaxation-induced anxiety isn't a diagnosis, and it doesn't necessarily require treatment unless this fear is interfering with a person's life.

But since relaxation techniques are a common treatment for anxiety disorders, this would obviously be problematic for people with a fear of relaxation. You can't suggest deep breathing exercises or meditation as a remedy for anxiety if these techniques make the person feel more nervous, uncomfortable, and worried while doing them.

Luberto developed her questionnaire as a tool for mental health professionals to use when working with anxiety patients. It can help identify those who are afraid of relaxation and might need a different treatment option to successfully overcome this fear.?

AFI Top 10 Films of 2012

Janson Jinnistan

I know this may irritate you because it is artistic, but the beach is a metaphor. The character is emotionally damaged (probably from the war, but he hints at trauma before that), and he drinks to return to that beach - a sense of serenity and calm. So he'll probably never leave that beach again, metaphorically speaking. It is a very artistic movie, so the difference is really whether or not you value "art" in your movies. If you don't, that's fine. But for the AFI, artistic achievement should be the criteria.

Are you as frustrated as I am? - National College of Business

A personal message from Jon Mailer?

When the National College of Business decided a few months ago to improve its ?online? presence, I realised that I needed to seriously upgrade my skills and knowledge in this area. I have invested close to 200 hours of my time in educating myself, and have been on a roller coaster ride since, and I have a question for you?

How are finding keeping up to a date with pace of the internet world?

?If you are like me, it is:

  • Time consuming
  • Challenging to decipher all the ?B.S.? and lingo used
  • Changing so quickly and? every one of the ?so called? experts has a different opinion on what to do next!

There appeared to be no structure that linked all of the different strategies, from website development to social media usage, online marketing to managing the content and behind the scenes processes. I also knew that with the pace of change ? it was only going to get more challenging to keep up to date.

By the way?here are interesting statistics on what is happening online.

  • 61% of consumers use the Internet even before making a purchase in shops (Verdict Research, May 2011)
  • 92% have more confidence in info found online than they do in anything from a salesperson or other source (Wall Street Journal, Jan 2011)
  • 70% consult online reviews or ratings before purchasing (BusinessWeek, Oct. 2011)
  • 45% say they are influenced a great deal by reviews on social sites from people they follow (Harris Poll, April 2010)
  • 34% have turned to social media to air their feelings about a company. 26% to express dissatisfaction, 23% to share companies or products they like. (Harris Poll, April 2010)
  • Reviews on a site can boost conversion +20% (Bazaarvoice.com/resources/stats 'Conversion Results')

I realised that as a business owner, the NCB must create a powerful online presence to match our offline activity. I persevered and from the ?sea of information? created our own structure that gave me clarity on what to do and the order in which to do it...and it is now starting to pay off!

?What I also recognised was that if I had a challenge with ?piecing it all together?, many other business owners definitely will as well.

?So?here it is. The 5 step process that we created to get clarity and confidence in the online space, to have a web presence that will produce amazing results in the future.

1. Online Strategy

Start with the ?end in mind?, outline the key ingredients, and execute on a plan that will give you maximum leverage on your investment of time and money. ?Also look at:

  • Creating your online brand
  • Hosting, security and back up
  • Data capture and management

?2. Website Development

Create or modifying your existing website to ensure that it fulfils on its #1 objective. Make sure it is functional and optimised to attract more of your ideal clients. Look at:

  • Key Word Research
  • Website design and development
  • Website platforms ? smartphone and tablet usability

?3. Marketing & Lead Generation

Use the internet and your website to attract, nurture and convert more of your target leads. ?Look at:

  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
  • Online advertising
  • Web Analytics
  • Content marketing
  • Email marketing
  • Integration with offline marketing

?4.?Creating Content and Using Social Media?

Understand the fundamentals of social media/networking and how to apply it specifically to your business. Look at:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • You Tube
  • Linked In and other social sites

5. ?Measurement, Systems and Automation

Create a systemised process for managing all of your online/internet activities that allows you to upscale or adjust your strategy with ease.? Look at:

  • Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Using offshore/external resources
  • Online tools such as Skype, Dropbox, Yammer, etc
  • Tracking, measuring and reporting

?

This 5 step process has worked exceptionally well for the college. The NCB is creating the opportunity to work with business owners to implement the above processes. If you would like some guidance in this area, just call the NCB and we would love to help you out.

Have a strong end to 2012 and may 2013 be your best year ever!

Jon?
