Apple wins injunction against samsung galaxy tab

Quote:

Its apple you give sympathies to?
The same apple that charges 900 times more for something you can build for way less?

I only sympathize with Apple when a competitor clones their product. If reports are to be trusted, Samsung didn't make any effort whatsoever to differentiate the appearance of their product with Apple's. As for charging 900 times more, etc... That's irrelevant. If it's too much, then don't buy it. But that doesn't mean a business isn't entitled to defend itself when a competitor makes a product that it's own lawyers can't tell apart.

Movie review: 'Ted' stuffed with raunchy humor | The Salt Lake Tribune

This film image released by Universal Pictures shows Mark Wahlberg, right, with the character Ted, voiced by Seth MacFarlane in a scene from "Ted." (AP Photo/Universal Pictures)

Review ? McFarlane brings ?Family Guy? style to big screen.

Whether you like "Ted" hinges on one thing: How do you feel about Seth McFarlane?

If you?re a fan of Fox TV?s "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show" (all of which McFarlane produces), you have an inkling of the salty, raunchy, politically incorrect and sometimes just plain offensive humor that McFarlane brings to his feature directing debut. Now take into account that he?s working with an R rating, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

?

HHHhj

?Ted?

A teddy bear comes to life, and never leaves, in Seth McFarlane?s slashingly funny comedy.

Where ? Theaters everywhere.

When ? Opens Friday, June 29.

Rating ? R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, and some drug use.

Running time ? 106 minutes.

I think "Ted" is freakin? hilarious. Your mileage may vary.

"Ted" begins like a winsome Christmas fantasy, complete with avuncular narrator (Patrick Stewart) describing a Christmas miracle: A lonely little boy, John, makes a wish that his new teddy bear could talk for real. The wish comes true, and the bear, now named Ted, becomes John?s best friend forever. Ted also becomes a minor celebrity, first adored by the masses and later falling into a spiral of drug use, arrests and scandals. All this is just in the pre-credits prologue.

The main part of the movie revolves around John (Mark Wahlberg), now a 35-year-old slacker who spends most of his time avoiding work and getting stoned with Ted (a computer-generated character voiced by McFarlane). John lives with his longtime girlfriend, Lori (played by Mila Kunis, who voices the annoying Meg on "Family Guy"), who?s starting to worry that John?s life is stagnating because of Ted?s party-hearty attitude.

McFarlane ? co-writing with "Family Guy" cohorts Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild ? draws upon a deep knowledge of pop-culture references and gives the foul-mouthed Ted an offensiveness that leaves no group untouched. (For example: When Ted is forced to get a supermarket job, he laments about his former celebrity status, "This is how the cast of ?Diff?rent Strokes? feels every hour. The living ones, I mean.")

Not every moment of "Ted" works. McFarlane is less than kind to female characters, depicting them as sluts or drips. (Kunis is pigeon-holed in the second category, as her Meg character on "Family Guy" has long been.) He also has a habit of recycling jokes, and his voicing of Ted recalls a bit too closely his "Family Guy" character Peter Griffin. There?s a disturbing subplot involving a creepy stalker (Giovanni Ribisi) who covets Ted.

But McFarlane throws a lot of jokes on the screen, and a fair percentage of them stick, and there?s a surprising sweetness to John and Ted?s friendship. "Ted" is likely to join the ranks of raunchy cult-classic comedies ? alongside "Airplane!" and "Caddyshack" ? that future Johns and Teds will sit at home and watch for years to come, possibly while getting high.

Do election laws encourage attack ads in campaigns?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington operatives call it "drawing contrasts." Voters call it "slinging mud."

Whatever the term used, the most expensive election in U.S. history is likely to feature an unprecedented amount of negative advertising as Republicans and Democrats vie for control of the White House and Congress, campaign officials told the Reuters Washington Summit.

The attack ads could be driven in part by laws that aim to keep elections clean by separating campaigns from interest groups, according to the spokesman for a Republican group that plans to spend $300 million this year.

"It's difficult for any outside organization to run effective positive ads," said Jonathan Collegio, communications director of American Crossroads, one of several "Super PACs" formed to take advantage of loosened campaign-finance laws that allow unlimited donations to such groups.

Groups that operate separately from campaigns aren't solely responsible for the surge in negative ads.

President Barack Obama's campaign is attacking Republican rival Mitt Romney's record as a private equity executive and as a one-term Massachusetts governor.

Obama's fellow Democrats in Congress, who had to defend Obama's unpopular health care overhaul in 2010, plan to run against equally unpopular ideas that Republicans have tried to put in place during the past two years.

In politics it is easier to play offense than defense, said U.S. Representative Steve Israel, who as head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is leading efforts to win back the House of Representatives.

"We're going to make this a referendum on Republican choices," he said.

Republicans and their allies, meanwhile, are primed to spend well over $1 billion attacking Obama and other Democrats.

"You'll see more of a message about voting against President Obama because his policies are failing the country," Collegio said.

The ratio of negative to positive ads may not differ substantially from previous election cycles, but two factors are likely to make 2012 seem nastier: the volume of advertising that will run in key states, and the rise of Super PACs along with their nonprofit sister groups, which do not have to disclose their donors.

The groups allow candidates to leave much of the dirty work of negative ads to outside allies.

NEGATIVE ADS EFFECTIVE

Restore Our Future, a Super PAC allied with Romney, has spent $47.4 million on negative ads so far, first to tear down Republican rivals such as former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum during a bruising primary season, and more recently to target Obama. The group has spend just $6.8 million on ads supporting Romney.

In the same vein, Priorities USA Action, a Super PAC that supports Obama, has spent $10.1 million attacking Romney and nothing on ads boosting Obama.

Voters often say they don't like negative ads, but political analysts say they deliver results. That seems to be the case this year.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released on Wednesday found that voters in battleground states view Romney less favorably than they did before Obama and Priorities USA launched a negative ad blitz targeting Romney's business career.

Voters in those states also hold a more negative opinion of Romney's career with the private equity firm Bain Capital than voters in the rest of the country, the poll found.

"It's clear that the ads are having an impact," said Bill Burton, who heads Priorities USA Action.

POSITIVE ADS DRAW LEGAL CHALLENGES

Existing election laws also may be a factor in promoting negative advertising.

Outside groups are not allowed to work directly with the candidates they support, and because of that may face heightened scrutiny for ads highlighting the attributes of a particular candidate.

When American Crossroads ran an ad backing Ohio U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman in 2010, the state's Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission.

The complaint ultimately was dismissed, but "it created a headache that no one wanted to have," said Collegio, adding, "In a weird way, the campaign laws encourage negative and contrast advertising."

That's hogwash, said Guy Cecil, who as chief of staff of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is leading his party's effort to retain control of the Senate.

There's no reason Crossroads couldn't film someone such as Montana Republican Senate candidate Dennis Rehberg speaking at a public event, for use in an ad, he said. Instead, the Super PAC has run ads critical of Democratic incumbent Jon Tester.

"It's not hard for them to run positive ads," he said. "You don't think Crossroads could access Dennis Rehberg's public schedule?"

Indeed, Crossroads said on Wednesday it would spend $184,000 airing an ad praising New Mexico's Republican Senate candidate Heather Wilson, an Air Force veteran.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has also run ads praising Republican candidates like Orrin Hatch in Utah and Linda Lingle in Hawaii.

Overall, 70 percent of the ads in this year's presidential race have been negative, according to the Wesleyan Media Project. In 2008, 9 percent were negative.

In coming months, Priorities USA will tie Romney to Republican ideas such as restricting access to contraception, cutting back stem cell research and scaling back the popular Medicare health plan for the elderly, Burton said.

He said he had little choice given the expected Republican onslaught.

"They're going to be nasty, and they're going to be dishonest, and the best we can do is make sure that we are answering point by point what they're saying about the president and what they're saying about Mitt Romney," he said.

If there's any silver lining, it's that both sides say they will steer clear of personal attacks.

"If a negative ad is running a message about how somebody had three ex-wives, and that kind of thing, that to me is very different than if you ran an ad about how somebody supported the last three tax increases," Collegio said.

Expanding The UK Economy Through More Retail Jobs

There were 3,400 more full time? retail jobs in the UK in the first quarter of 2011, compared to the same three months in 2010, according to? research published last year.

The Retail Employment Monitor from the British Retail Consortium, and law firm Bond Pearce, found that the number of retail outlets grew by over 5.3 per cent during the same period.

Data from the study indicates that food retailers were the most confident about investing and creating jobs, and this was backed up by recent announcements by grocers such as Sainsbury?s, Co-op and Waitrose, all of whom were planning to expand in 2011.

So what about 2012? The Local Data Company reported its monthly barometer of shop vacancies had jumped to 14.6% in February after steadying last year at 14.3%.

So that was a good sign, with a 0.3% increase.

The trouble seems to be that with all the doom and gloom talked about on news programmes daily, customers are refusing to lift sales figures enough for their to be a sustantial increase in retail employment. Although we are seeing small gains, we are not seeing enough to offset the huge unemployment figures we see. Over 2.5 million in the Uk.

What can be done then to try and pick up the retail sector, that suffers more and more run down high streets every day? How can we get this massive employer growing enough to increase employment in the retail sector enough to start making a big dent in the countries unemployment statistics? I have two simple solutions, that would have a great deal of benefit long term for this sector.

1.

I would reduce VAT by at least 5%. This would increase the amount of stuff people could buy, and therefore increase the amount of people required to work in the sector. The government would of course take the hit of several billion, but you will have more people working and paying tax through the private sector. I think retail businesses would grow rapidly, and the only loser would be the government with loss of VAT revenue. I am sure they could think of something to cut by the amount they are losing that is not as valuable as having jobs for a large amount of unemployed people on the dole.

2. You have to promote more zero hour contracts. This allows companies to let staff go when demand is too low to support their employ. It is already a legal way to emply people, so why not get more companies using it? Staff would not have so much job security, yet there would be a larger amount of jobs for them to go into should they have to find work elsewhere. They could also take better paid jobs without having to offer notice, which would work in their favour ahead of their employers, so it really is swings and roundabouts.

You are never going to have perfect conditions for both workers and employers, and the governemnt can't keep harking on about getting more growth, whilst it refuses tax cuts. The call to reduce employment red tape is already out there, it just needs to be promoted to companies and the work force alike. The future of retail depends on the UK being responsive to the change in the consumer marketplace. The government must acknowledge this and act accordingly. Get retail growing, and the jobs in retail will also start to flourish. Once this happens you just watch the rest of the economy bloom. Isn't that what we are all looking for in 2012?

CEO of T-Mobile USA resigns, succeeded by COO

(AP) ? T-Mobile USA, the country's fourth-largest cellphone carrier, on Wednesday said that its CEO has resigned and its chief operating officer is filling in while the company searches for a replacement.

T-Mobile, which is based in Bellevue, Wash., is struggling to compete against its largest rivals. Departing CEO Philipp Humm took the reins in November 2010, with a mission to reverse the slow slide of the business without help from the German parent company, Deutsche Telekom AG.

But revenue continued to decline every quarter of Humm's tenure. In March 2011, he seemingly found a way out of T-Mobile's difficult position by striking a deal to have AT&T Inc. buy the company for $39 billion. However, the takeover was scuttled by federal regulators, who feared that it would reduce competition in the industry and raise prices for consumers.

Humm was an executive with at Deutsche Telekom before taking the U.S. job. The company said he has left to "pursue a career outside of Deutsche Telekom" and rejoin his family in Germany.

Now, the company needs "somebody who can convert initiatives into market-successes," said Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann, in a statement.

COO Jim Alling is taking over Humm's duties in the interim.

T-Mobile's long-term prospects have improved slightly this year. It's still the only nationwide U.S. cellphone carrier that doesn't sell the iPhone, which means it's losing high-paying smartphone users to rivals. But thanks to a "breakup gift" from AT&T, it now has room on the airwaves to initiate a revamp of its network that will result in it becoming compatible with the iPhone.

On Tuesday, T-Mobile said it had agreed to buy some spectrum from Verizon Wireless and swap other spectrum holdings, further improving its ability to offer wireless data service. However, the deal is conditioned on regulatory approval of Verizon's deals with other companies.

Humm was the managing director of Deutsche Telekom's German wireless arm from 2005 and 2008. He resigned then to take responsibility for the loss of 17 million subscriber records to theft in 2006, and the company's subsequent handling of the breach. The company said in 2008 that there was no sign the data had been misused.

Self improvement - Spirituality - Personal Growth: Psychic Detection

If you watch TV or pick up a paperback sooner or later you are bound to come across a psychic detective (a psychic detective is a person who investigates crimes by using their claimed paranormal psychic abilities). The first psychic detective appeared as early as 1897 in the form Flaxman Low who was invented by mother and son writing team Kate and Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard.

More recently TV viewers in Australia, Japan, America, Canada and the UK have been treated to the series Psychic Detectives or Psychic Investigators (the program name changed according to the country in which it was shown).

The programme follows cases in which real-life psychics try to help the police with their investigations. The series isn't too popular with sceptics who claim the psychics involved have made exaggerated claims of events. Whilst this might make good TV the series raises some questions; can psychics really help solve crimes and do the police ever resort to using psychics to help their investigations?.

Psychic Sleuths, a study of the subject by Joe Nickell PhD suggests that psychic detectives were not particularly effective; many gave uselessly vague information that could be made to fit the case after it was solved but that would have been no use to the police investigating the matter whatsoever.

Some cases however were more intriguing than the others. In 1980 a nurse went missing in LA, at the time an ordinary woman who was not a professional psychic claimed to have a vision of the nurse's body. She was able to point the area on a map where the unfortunate nurse's remains were and even arrived at the scene before the police. Nickell claims the woman could have found out about the murder site before the police as a local man had already boasted about killing the nurse. Whatever the truth of the situation a number of people have claimed their psychic abilities have allowed them to assist police in solving cases.

Most police departments say that they do not keep records regarding such activity or seek out such help. Nevertheless, there is some evidence that despite their reticence the police aren't adverse to seeking a little extra-sensory help from time to time. One former Detective Senior Constable of the Australian police; Jeffrey Little, has said police do use psychic detectives "even though they officially say they don't".

It seems the police in NSW have used psychic Debbie Malone on a number of cases. While no evidence she has supplied has solved murders or missing investigations on it's own she has been asked to corroborate theories. Little, in reference to one case she assisted on, felt her description of what happened was "exceptional", other officers also had been impressed by her assistance, while yet other NSW officers felt she had not helped solve any cases. Sergeant Gae Crea and Detective Sergeant Damian Loone, state that she did not give them anything the police and the public didn't already know.

Perhaps more interesting are the cases where the police did not listen and clearly should have. In 2001, the body of Thomas Braun was located by Perth based Aboriginal clairvoyant Leanna Adams in Western Australia. Police had initially been unable to find the body. Braun's had been told to contact Adams, an Aboriginal psychic who lived in Perth. The Braun Family had requested police to conduct a search based on Adams' directions but they had not assisted. Adams went to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, and took the family members directly to Braun's remains, a spot high on a ridge west of the town, some 20 kilometres out. The remains were not immediately identifiable but the police later confirmed the remains to be his using DNA testing.

In the UK the Police have also officially pooh-poohed the idea of using psychic help and in 2009 the Metropolitan Police categorically denied using psychics to assist them with their cases. Later, emails were published that suggested they had used psychic helpers on investigations. The shame faced Met issued a statement which read; "We do not identify people we may or may not speak with in connection with inquiries. We are not prepared to discuss this further."

Now, if you are open to the help psychics can give you, why not have a Video Psychic Reading which guarantees a 100% refund if you are not happy. Then again, if you would prefer to speak to a Psychic by Telephone, this service is available too.

HTC Connect certifies AV gear for your One series phone, Pioneer lines up

HTC is going on something of a certification tangent: it's following its PlayStation Suite approval with its own program, HTC Connect. Home AV equipment with the label promises to lift the standards for streaming media to or from one of HTC's devices. The rubber stamp will be limited at first to DLNA audio and video, but it should eventually include just about anything that doesn't involve a wire, such as Bluetooth, in-car media, NFC and wireless speakers. There isn't an immediate deluge of partners. HTC has scored a rather big ally, however: Pioneer's DLNA-ready receivers and wireless speakers this year, and beyond, will flaunt the HTC Connect badge. Don't brag about the media credentials of your One X just yet. Although the Connect seal of approval won't be needed for media streaming anytime soon, it will only be coming to the One series through an upgrade in the months ahead.

Police: Dylan McDermott's mother was murdered

Allen Berezovsky / Getty Images file

By Courtney Hazlett

Once considered a cold case, a reopened police investigation in Connecticut has determined that actor Dylan McDermott's mother was murdered by her boyfriend in 1967.

Diane McDermott was shot when Dylan was just 5 years old, and her death in February 1967 was originally ruled an accident. Waterbury, Conn., police reopened the investigation into the death of the woman?last year after Dylan McDermott contacted police with questions about her death, according to the Republican-American newspaper. Police told the paper that the evidence they found surrounding Diane's death was enough to file murder charges against John Sponza, who had ties to organized crime. Sponza, however, was killed in 1972, his body found in the trunk of a car in a Massachusetts grocery store parking lot, according to The Associated Press.

It was Dylan who personally asked police to re-examine the case, and Police Superintendent Michael Gugliotti told the Republican-American that Dylan?s celebrity didn?t factor? into the decision to reopen the investigation?he would have done it for anyone coming in looking for answers.

Gugliotti did, however, ask Dylan why he showed up at police headquarters after so many years. ?His answer was quite profound,? Gugliotti told the Republican-American. ?He said, ?In order for me to survive and to get where I am today, I needed to bury that moment in my life deep within myself.? He said it wasn?t until recently ?that I?ve come to the point in my life where I?m able to begin to process all of this.?

At the time of the murder, Dylan was standing outside the door of his apartment; Stanza had just kicked him out. The paper reports that Dylan heard the gunshot, then, ?stood, stuck outside as police and an ambulance arrived. A gurney carried his mother from the apartment, her head bloody and bandaged from what would prove to be a lethal gunshot.?

Sponza was the only witness to that gunshot, and he told police that Diane had committed suicide, a lie that would up until now.

Among the findings that led to the police's new conclusion: the state medical examiner determined that the gun found near Diane McDermott's?body was too small a caliber to have been the weapon used to kill her, and the murder weapon had to have been pressed to the back of her head, according to the report.

Gugliotti also took issue with some of the original findings.

"What troubled me was that there was very little follow up other than the statement Sponza had given to police," said Gugliotti. "Sponza is telling the police that night that he very rarely, if ever, had arguments, yet everyone we spoke to, including Dylan, who was only 5 at the time, remembered very violent, vicious arguments. Dylan vividly recalls the amount of times, not only flashing the gun, but pointing it at the kid, saying, 'Shut up and get out of here.' He's still probably traumatized by that."

Dylan McDermott has yet to comment about the investigation, but his sister Robin Herrera said she's relieved by the outcome of the investigation. "I'm happy to know my mother wasn't mentally ill or depressed," she said. "Somebody took her from us; she didn't leave us."

Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi wins Egypt election

After winning Egypt's presidential election, Mohammed Morsi claims to have quit the Muslim Brotherhood. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo, Egypt.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at 1:17 p.m. ET: CAIRO -??Mohammed Morsi, the?Muslim Brotherhood-backed candidate,?was declared Egypt's first Islamist president on Sunday with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote, defeating former Mubarak acolyte Ahmed Shafiq.

?The announcement by the state election committee touched off a jubilant celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where thousands of Brotherhood supporters burst into cheers. The crowd waved national flags and chanted "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great!" Morsi?will be sworn in on July 1, according to the election timetable.

His victory followed?speculation and anxiety about backroom deals and suspected interference by the ruling military council in determining the outcome in favor of Shafiq, widely seen as the candidate of pre-revolution Egypt.

In the end, Morsi won 51.7 percent, or 13,230,131 votes, to?48 percent, or 12,347,380 votes, for Shafiq,?the state election committee?announced.

Supporters of Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, protest against Egypt's military rulers in Tahrir Square on Saturday.

There were some isolated scuffles in parts of Cairo between rival groups. Several hundred Shafiq supporters in the middle-class suburb of Nasr City chanted "Save Egypt! The Brotherhood will destroy it!,'' while soldiers tried to keep traffic moving.

Morsi resigned from the Muslim Brotherhood party after he was declared president.

Morsi, a 60-year-old, U.S.-educated engineer who spent time in jail under Mubarak, won the first round ballot in May with a little under a quarter of the vote. He has pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to the many Egyptians, including a large Christian minority, who are anxious over religious rule.?

The military council will retain control of the biggest army in the Middle East, whose closest ally is the United States. Morsi has said he will respect international treaties, notably that signed with Israel in 1979, on which much U.S. aid depends.?

NBC Foreign Correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Tahrir Square.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council that has ruled Egypt for more than 16 months, congratulated the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate on Sunday after his presidential election win was confirmed, state television reported.?The report, made in a brief headline, did not give further details.

Morsi "will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo. "Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around. This would be a mistake. His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

Egypt's ruling armed forces were on alert on Sunday as fears of violence mounted in the final hours before the state election committee named the winner of last weekend's presidential vote.

Egyptians fill Cairo's Tahrir Square in anticipation of a new government being announced. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Sunday's result -- 500 days after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak -- is historic for the Middle East, but will not end power struggles between the army, Islamists and others over Egypt's future.

The generals, who oversaw Mubarak's departure on Feb. 11, 2011, have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close U.S. ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s office released a statement Sunday, saying he "appreciates the democratic process in Egypt and respects its outcome."

"Israel expects continue cooperation with the Egyptian administration on the basis of the peace accord between the two countries, which is in the interest of the two peoples and contributes to regional stability,'' the statement said.

The son of a peasant farmer, Morsi has spoken of a simple childhood in a village in the Nile Delta province of Sharqia, recalling how his mother taught him prayer and the Koran. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1982 after studying at Cairo University.?

Following his studies in the United States, he returned to Egypt in 1985. Two of his five children hold U.S. citizenship.?

Black Keys sue Pizza Hut, Home Depot over song use

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Black Keys are not shilling power tools or pizza, the band said in copyright infringement lawsuits against The Home Depot and Pizza Hut.

The "Lonely Boy" band filed the federal lawsuits Thursday, claiming Home Depot did not have permission to use elements of the hit song in an ad promoting power tools and that Pizza Hut misused "Gold on the Ceiling" in a recent ad.

Both songs appeared on the rock group's seventh album, "El Camino," which was released last year and has sold nearly 840,000 copies. The Black Keys are comprised of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney. Musician-producer Brian Burton, who is known as Danger Mouse, is also suing the companies.

"The experts confirmed that this was copyright infringement," band spokeswoman Mary Moyer said in a statement.

The cases seek unspecified damages of more than $75,000 apiece and an order preventing the continued use of the songs in the commercials.

"We haven't seen the complaint yet, but respect for intellectual property rights is a matter we take very seriously," said Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes.

Pizza Hut spokesman Christopher Fuller said the company also hasn't seen the case, but fully respects artists' rights. He directed inquiries to the ad's creators, The Martin Agency and The Interpublic Group of Companies.

A Martin Agency spokesman said the company doesn't respond to pending lawsuits, and a spokesman for the Interpublic Group of Companies was not immediately available.

The suits claim both companies were given written notices that the ads misused The Black Keys' music. The Home Depot ad touts Ryobi power tools, while the Pizza Hut ad touts its new "Cheesy Bites Pizza."

Neither company received permission to use musical elements from the songs. The ads do not include any vocals.

"Lonely Boy" and "Gold on the Ceiling" both topped the Billboard alternative music chart after their release.

The Black Keys won two Grammy Awards in 2010 for music from their album "Brothers," which won the Best Alternative Music Album award that year.

Multiple sclerosis patients have lower risk of cancer: research

Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients appear to have a lower cancer risk, according to a new study led by researchers at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Coastal Health.

The study, published in the current issue of the journal Brain, is the first to investigate overall cancer risk in MS patients in North America.

"Because the immune system plays important roles in both cancer and MS, we wanted to know whether the risk of cancer is different for people with MS," says Elaine Kingwell, the study's lead author and a postdoctoral fellow in the UBC Faculty of Medicine and Brain Research Centre at UBC and VCH Research Institute. "Not only did MS patients have a lower overall cancer risk, the risk for colorectal cancer in particular was significantly lower."

The researchers compared the diagnoses of cancer in MS patients in British Columbia with those of the general population. While they found that MS patients have a lower risk in general for cancer ? and in particular for colorectal cancer ? they found that the risks for brain cancer and bladder cancer were slightly elevated (albeit not significantly). In patients with relapsing-onset MS, the risk for non-melanoma skin cancer was significantly greater.

Further studies will be needed to understand the reasons for this reduced overall cancer risk.

An unexpected finding was that for those who did develop cancer, tumour size tended to be larger at time of diagnosis. More work is needed to determine why some tumours might be caught later in people with MS.

"Because the symptoms of MS can be broad and include feelings of fatigue, it's possible the symptoms of cancer are being masked or overlooked," says Helen Tremlett, the study's senior author and an associate professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine. She adds that, regardless of the findings, MS patients and their physicians are encouraged to follow cancer screening guidelines. Her team is planning a follow up study to determine whether death rates due to cancer are altered in MS patients.
