ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? The San Jacinto Fault (SJF) Zone is a seismically active, major component of the overall southern San Andreas Fault system. Researchers from San Diego State University (SDSU) and U.S. Geological Survey have mapped evidence of past ruptures consistent with very large earthquakes along the Clark Fault, an individual strand associated with the SJF.
James Barrett Salisbury, now at Arizona State University and formerly a graduate student at SDSU, and his colleagues mapped the terrain by using both LiDAR and traditional field methods in order to determine the usefulness of LiDAR, which is an aerial mapping technology that emits laser pulses from an instrument mounted in an airplane. The laser pulses penetrate dense vegetation, allowing for the vegetation to be removed in data processing to yield high-resolution images of Earth's surface. LiDAR is especially useful for analyzing rugged, poorly accessible terrain.
Salisbury and his colleagues identified geomorphic evidence that suggests three large seismic events at evenly spaced intervals along the Clark Fault. This evidence correlates with previous research by co-author Tom Rockwell who dated events at the Hog Lake paleoseismic site near Anza, Calif. Salisbury et al., infer that Nov. 22, 1800 is the date of the most recent surface rupturing earthquake event on the Clark fault. It correlates to the poorly located historic event recorded in southern California, and generally corresponds to the most recent event date at Hog Lake, which is radiocarbon dated at ca. 1790.

Movie Review: In Wrath of the Titans' Battle Between Gods and Men ...
Wrath of the Titans, the sequel to the loud, joyless 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans, is a nonstop action-adventure story that only very occasionally pauses to see if there?s anything it might do to entertain the audience.
The movie is a piece of junk mythology, a crude amalgamation of characters from the legends of the Greek gods of Olympus, in a story that Edith Hamilton probably wouldn?t recognize as fitting the classical tradition.
That in itself is OK: the original Clash of the Titans was junk too, and I have fond memories?of watching it far too many times on TBS as a child. Special effects guru Ray Harryhausen?s wonderful (and, yes, cheesy) stop-motion monsters were so much fun to watch.?The problem with?Wrath?is that it captures no similar sense of wonder.
We?re quickly re-introduced to demigod Perseus (Sam Worthington), who is now a single dad living the hardscrabble life of a fisherman after having rejected the offer by his father (the god Zeus) to make him an immortal at the end of the last film. Then Zeus (Liam Neeson) and his brother Poseidon (Danny Huston) get double-crossed and imprisoned by his son Ares (Edgar Ramirez) and other brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes). Perseus is the world?s only hope of stopping Hades? harebrained scheme to release Kronos (the leader of the Titans and father of the Olympian Gods) from the underworld.
Director Jonathan Liebesman films the action sequences in a shaky, handheld-camera style that never allowed me to feel oriented within what was happening. The first major fight is a blur of dirt, blood, flames, and fur as the hero Perseus saves his small fishing village from a pack of two-headed, flying, fire-breathing, lion-shaped monsters. To employ a camera technique better suited for visceral, realistic action films (like the Bourne trilogy) is to deny us one of the greatest appeals of a fantasy film: we never get a good look at the beasts.
Here Greece is a wasteland of brown and gray dirt, vast stretches of which seem to be emitting smoke or on fire. Except for the beautiful Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), every member of the cast (gods included) is perpetually coated in sweat, blood, and grime. Andromeda finds time for a few wardrobe changes from scene to scene, but Perseus can?t seem to spare a few seconds to splash a little water on his face.
One improvement that Wrath makes over its franchise-rebooting predecessor is the injection of a bit more humor. Miraculously, the movie becomes almost enjoyable after Perseus enlists the help of Andromeda and Agenor (Toby Kebbell) to find the god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), who can show them how to reach the underworld to rescue Zeus and stop Kronos. Nighy brings his usual brand of slyness to the role of a somewhat schizophrenic deity, and the result is fun. A movie like this is supposed to be nothing but fun, isn?t it?
But it doesn?t last. Ares shows up to glower some more and ruins the whole thing. Stupid, boring god of war.

2 Trees Twice Thought to Be Extinct Rediscovered in Tanzania
According to a paper published in the Journal of East African Natural History, the two species were rediscovered in the remote, highly fragmented and rarely explored Namatimbili?Ngarama Forest, 35 kilometers inland from the Pacific Ocean.
Erythrina schliebenii had only been known from two samples collected near Lake Lutamba in the 1930s, an area that has since been clear-cut. A specimen was rediscovered in a tiny patch of forest in 2001, but a Dutch company cleared the area to create a biofuel plantation in 2008.
The second tree, Karomia gigas, was first discovered in 1977 when a specimen was observed in Kenya?s Mwara Kaya sacred forest. It was only seen one other time, in 1993, 600 kilometers away in Tanzania. The initial specimen was chopped down a few years after it was identified, and the second has since also been lost.
?The rediscovery of these two trees highlights the lack of information in a forested region where we could be losing species without ever knowing they are there,? co-author Neil Burgess, senior advisor to the World Wildlife Fund?s (WWF) conservation and Africa program, said in a prepared statement. ?Conservation of these forests, in partnership with local villages, is essential. This can also lead to standing forest being used as an income source for communities through the development of sustainable logging initiatives.?
According to the WWF, the coastal forests where these trees were rediscovered are increasingly fragmented or cleared as the area?s human population grows and expands. ?Erythrina schliebenii has only survived because it grows in rocky areas that are not usually cleared for cultivation, but even those areas will be cleared one day if nothing is done,? said co-author Cosmas Mligo, a botanist from the University of Dar es Salaam.
Exact counts of these trees are still not available, but the authors estimated the population of each at fewer than 50 individuals and warn that they remain critically endangered.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Property interests dominate Hong Kong's economy and hold great sway over the scandal-hit leadership "election" taking place on Sunday, but public resentment over the influence of big business is growing in the world's most expensive housing market.
China regained control of Hong Kong from Britain in 1997, promising the financial hub full democracy as an ultimate goal, but the people still have no direct say in choosing their next leader and have threatened to take to the streets in protest on Sunday whatever the result.
Hong Kong executive Markus Shaw, the grand nephew of media and film mogul Run Run Shaw, branded the territory's economy an oligarchy, dominated by conglomerates, most with their roots in property. They have great influence over the 1,200-member election committee, which will choose a successor to the bow tie-wearing chief executive, Donald Tsang.
"You know they are basically controlling blocks of votes," Shaw told Reuters in his office where he oversees his family's wealth. "That kind of hurdle is very hard to overcome unless you are their chosen candidate."
Shaw's cynicism illustrates the skewed nature of Hong Kong's political landscape in which greater forces -- Beijing's Communist Party leaders and the city's tycoons -- are able to influence policy making for their own ends. The election committee is stacked with Beijing loyalists.
Beijing's desire for control and the tycoons' thirst for favorable land policies drown out public demands for democracy and affordable housing in what is often hailed as one of the freest and most open economies in Asia, if not the world.
"That's the dirty secret about Hong Kong, really," shareholder activist David Webb said.

A series of scandals, many of them real-estate related, has stirred public anger about the tight link between property tycoons and Hong Kong's leaders.
One candidate in Sunday's election, Henry Tang, until recently believed to have Beijing's blessing, has been rocked by revelations of a 2,400-sq ft illegal basement below a family mansion, bigger than most people's homes in the densely populated city.
'COZY RELATIONSHIP'
Outgoing leader Tsang has been criticized for accepting advantages from property tycoons, mingling with the ultra-rich on private yachts and jets, and renting a 6,000-sq ft apartment in southern China at favorable rates.
"There's always been this cozy relationship between the tycoon community and politicians," Peter Churchouse, a property investor who runs the family office Portwood Capital, said. "The tycoons have ridden roughshod over the public and public opinion."
Many tycoons sit on the election committee, including Li Ka-shing, Asia's richest man and founder of Cheung Kong (Holdings); Thomas Kwok Ping-kwong, one of the brothers running Sun Hung Kai Properties, Asia's largest developer by market value; and Lee Shau-kee, the leader of Henderson Land.
The three families control swathes of votes among the 1,193 election committee members through interests in n industries like hotels and transport, such as Sun Hung Kai subsidiary Kowloon Motor Bus, independent observers like Webb say. Unlike Markus Shaw, who did not make it onto the election committee, all of the 18 people representing the property industry were uncontested appointees to the committee.
Sun Hung Kai, Cheung Kong and Henderson Land dominate the market for residential real estate. They will provide 54 percent of the 20,398 private housing units expected to be launched in the city in 2012, Barclays Capital estimates.
Land premiums made up 17.4 percent of government revenue in the 2010-2011 financial year, or HK$65.5 billion ($8.4 billion). Stamp duty from property sales made up another 6.5 percent of collections. That means 24 percent of the money the government raised came from property deals.

Tsang also cruised back from Macau aboard a $19 million yacht owned by a company linked to billionaire tycoon Thomas Lau, the South China Morning Post reported. Lau, who will vote on Sunday, is the brother of Joseph Lau, one of Hong Kong's best-known developers who runs Chinese Estates Holdings.
"Until recently, crony capitalism was a conspiracy theory," Shaw said. "Now with what's happened with Donald Tsang and his relationship with these businessmen, the conspiracy theory has been revealed to be true."
Shaw says he will also take to the streets if Tang, the candidate favored by big business and explicitly backed by the likes of Li Ka-shing, is elected. Tang's main opponent, Leung Chun-ying, left the property brokerage firm DTZ to run, and faces a legislative probe over a conflict of interest construction scandal.
'ROOT AND BRANCH CHANGE NEEDED'

Christine Loh, co-founder of the think tank Civic Exchange, believes Hong Kong's dependence on land sales has created a "political economy of land" the next leader needs to address.
"There's a sense of entitlement to certain things -- that is what gets the man in the street," Loh said. "It isn't just the individuals that come together. The system binds them together. That is the change that is most difficult. You need a root and branch change."

Actually Pretty Awesome: The Lamb Tongue Salad at Txoko -- Grub ...

Txoko, the Basque-inflected restaurant in the old Enrico's space in North Beach, has been turning out some solidly interesting food and drink since last year. Just recently chef Ian Begg decided to reformat the menu, moving away from the pinxtos-and-small-plates idea they started with, and offering a more traditional selection of starters and mains, that still includes some standout dishes. Our favorite is this warm lamb-tongue salad, which came mixed with soft boiled potatoes, manchego, and topped with crispy shoestring potatoes.
The tangy, gaminess of the lamb is a strong counterpoint to the cheese and fris?e, and the texture is of the same, crumbling tenderness of the braised potato.
It could serve as an entr?e, and it's a fantastically balanced, satisfying, and dare we say manly salad, with the added bonus of a condiment of smoked tomato on the plate, adding some necessary acid.
We'd order it again and again, especially with one of the bar's well-mixed cocktails, but sadly we note it's been cycled off the menu, at least for tonight. Look for it soon, or beg Chef Begg to make you one.

Kiribati President Anote Tong told The Associated Press on Friday that his Cabinet this week endorsed a plan to buy nearly 6,000 acres on Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. He said the fertile land, being sold by a church group for about $9.6 million, could be insurance for Kiribati's entire population of 103,000, though he hopes it will never be necessary for everyone to leave.
"We would hope not to put everyone on one piece of land, but if it became absolutely necessary, yes, we could do it," Tong said. "It wouldn't be for me, personally, but would apply more to a younger generation. For them, moving won't be a matter of choice. It's basically going to be a matter of survival."
Kiribati, which straddles the equator near the international date line, has found itself at the leading edge of the debate on climate change because many of its atolls rise just a few feet above sea level.
Tong said some villages have already moved and there have been increasing instances of sea water contaminating the island's underground fresh water, which remains vital for trees and crops. He said changing rainfall, tidal and storm patterns pose as least as much threat as ocean levels, which so far have risen only slightly.
Some scientists have estimated the current level of sea rise in the Pacific at about 2 millimeters (0.1 inches) per year. Many scientists expect that rate to accelerate due to climate change.
Fiji, home to about 850,000 people, is about 1,400 miles south of Kiribati. But just what people there think about potentially providing a home for thousands of their neighbors remains unclear. Tong said he's awaiting full parliamentary approval for the land purchase, which he expects in April, before discussing the plan formally with Fijian officials.
Sharon Smith-Johns, a spokeswoman for the Fijian government, said several agencies are studying Kiribati's plans and the government will release a formal statement next week.
Kiribati, which was known as the Gilbert Islands when it was a British colony, has been an independent nation since 1979.
Tong has been considering other unusual options to combat climate change, including shoring up some Kiribati islands with sea walls and even building a floating island. He said this week that the latter option would likely prove too expensive, but that he hopes reinforcing some islands will ensure that Kiribati continues to exist in some form even in a worst-case scenario.
"We're trying to secure the future of our people," he said. "The international community needs to be addressing this problem more."
Tong said he hopes that the Fiji land will represent just one of several options for relocating people. He pointed out that the land is three times larger than the atoll of Tarawa, currently home to more than half of Kiribati's population.
Although like much of the Pacific, Kiribati is poor ? its annual GDP per person is just $1,600 ? Tong said the country has plenty of foreign reserves to draw from for the land purchase. The money, he said, comes from phosphate mining on the archipelago in the 1970s.

February jobs gains seen strong, keeping Fed at bay
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Employment likely grew solidly for a third straight month in February, a sign the economic recovery is becoming more durable and in less need of further monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve.
The economy probably created 210,000 jobs last month, according to a Reuters survey, following January's tally of 243,000. The unemployment rate is expected to have held at a three-year low of 8.3 percent.
If the forecasts are accurate, the government's jobs report on Friday would mark the first time since early 2011 that payrolls have grown by more than 200,000 for three months in a row - an outcome that could bolster President Barack Obama's chances of winning re-election.
"The improving labor market is another sign that the recovery is broadening and reduces the urgency for the Fed to act now," said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist at Moody's Analytics in West Chester Pennsylvania.
The Labor Department will release the employment report at 8:30 a.m. (1330 GMT).
Although the job market is gaining some muscle, the pace of improvement remains too slow to do much to absorb the 23.8 million Americans who are either out of work or underemployed.
Fed Chairman Bernanke last week described the labor market as "far from normal" and said continued improvement would require stronger demand for goods and services.
Still, he suggested the outlook would have to deteriorate in order for the central bank to launch another round of bond buying to drive interest rates lower. Officials said in January they expected growth this year to be no higher than 2.7 percent.
The jobs report, which sets the tone for financial markets worldwide, would add to the list of data highlighting the economy's underlying strength.
It would also provide a hopeful sign for the global recovery at a time that growth is slowing in China and the euro zone appears to be sliding into recession. The jobless rate in the 17-nation euro zone area rose to 10.7 percent in January, the highest since the euro started circulating in 2000.
NUMBERS GOOD FOR OBAMA
In contrast, the unemployment rate has dropped 0.8 percentage point since August, providing some relief to Obama, who faces an election battle in which the economy has been taking center stage.
Economists predict the jobless rate could fall below 8 percent by November, even if the recent firming in the jobs market lures Americans who have given up the search for work back into the labor force.
The possibility that discouraged workers resumed the hunt for a job raises the risk that unemployment rose in February.
The labor force participation rate - the percentage of working-age Americans either with a job or looking for one - is near a 29-year low. If it were to rise, it would put upward pressure on the jobless rate.
Employers have added about 1 million jobs since August, according to the government's main payroll survey. The separate survey of households that is used to measure the jobless rate has shown even brisker hiring.
While some parts of the jobs market, such as construction, have benefited from unseasonably warm winter weather, economists say a genuine improvement is under way, even though they expect a slight pull back in March.
Private companies are expected to again account for all the job gains in February, with government employment seen falling for a sixth straight month.
Manufacturing, which in January recorded the largest gain in a year, is expected to dominate job creation in February, reflecting stepped up auto production.
Most auto companies are taking on new workers and adding shifts and overtime to meet pent-up demand after production was disrupted early last year following the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.
With the anticipated job gains in manufacturing, average hourly earnings are expected to have increased 0.2 percent in February after a similar increase in January. The overall work week is expected to hold steady at 34.5 hours.
Earnings will be closely watched for signs of wage inflation after unit labor costs grew much more strongly than initially thought in the third and fourth quarters of 2011.
Outside manufacturing, construction payrolls are expected to show another month of sizeable gains after adding a total of 52,000 jobs in December and January.
Although hiring has quickened, the economy faces persistent long-term unemployment. In January, about 43 percent of the 12.8 million unemployed Americans had been out of work for more than six months.
"We are not yet there in terms of getting everybody back to work, that's going to take a while," said Steve Blitz, chief economist at ITG Investment Research in New York.
